We loved to have class visitors. Before a speaker arrived, we made a long list of questions we wanted answered, topics we wanted discussed. We sent this list to the speaker to serve as a skeleton for the speaker.

One time we had a bio-archaeologist scheduled. She showed up in jeans with holes on the knees, and a cool outback sun hat. She conducted her presentation on the classroom floor. She lay her artifacts all around so that everyone could get a good view. She invited them to feel them and had them imagine what life was like 6000 (???) years ago. Then she related what we had been studying to archeology. It was totally. She closed her prez with her guitar; had them all singing about "Rock of Ages," etc.

My students were bedazzled. "WOW! She was sooooo cool!" "She didn't seem stuffy at all."  "I wanna be like her when I grow up."""

And of course I had them write summaries and "Thank-you-letters-and-here's- what-I-learned."

  1. What an awesome opportunity for these kids to learn from and interact with such a dynamic scientist! That is something they'll remember their whole lives. You rule!

    1. Sorry for the delay. I guess I sort of dropped the ball. I had such a wonderful time at the retreat, I sorta got a big head...if that makes any sense.

  3. You continue to awe me. I reallyreallyreally wish you had been my science teacher (except you would have been a kid, since we're both, uh, veteran human beings. ;)
